Cutting a pet door into a security door is easy to do badly. Done properly, the opening sits in a solid lower panel — not in the mesh — the frame keeps its strength, the flap seals, and the door still locks and operates exactly as it should.

A security door gets its strength from the perimeter frame and the way the mesh is retained. Put a hole in the wrong place and you have removed the thing that makes it a security door. We specify a solid infill panel at the bottom of the leaf, position the pet door within that panel with adequate margins, and keep the mesh area and locking hardware intact. On sliding screens we assess the stile widths and roller loading first, because not every sliding screen is a suitable host.

Can you put a pet door into my existing security door?+
Often yes, if the door has — or can take — a solid lower panel and the frame allows it. If the door is full-mesh with narrow stiles, cutting it would compromise the security performance, and we'll say so rather than do it.
Does a pet door weaken the security door?+
Not when it's fitted into a properly sized solid infill panel with correct margins. It does weaken the door badly if it's cut through the mesh area or too close to the frame, which is why placement is the whole job.
Can the pet door be locked?+
Yes. Lockable and two-way flap options are available so you can close it off at night or while you're away.
What height should it be?+
Generally set so your pet steps through comfortably without ducking or climbing. We measure the animal's shoulder height at the appointment where possible.
Is it a security risk for the house?+
A correctly sized pet door in a solid panel is a small opening low on the door. Larger openings deserve more thought, and we'll discuss placement, sightlines and lockable flaps with you.
Can I order a new door already set up for it?+
Yes, and it's the tidier result. Ordering the door with the panel and pet-door aperture built in avoids any on-site cutting.
